The federal government levied a $4.2-million penalty fee on the American Red Cross on Friday, saying that the charity has failed to take steps to protect the safety of the nation’s blood supply, The Washington Post reports.
The federal Food and Drug Administration also told the Red Cross to review its procedures to ensure that it was doing everything possible to make sure blood does not get contaminated.
The government agency said that the accumulation of problems was the reason it decided to impose a large fine and hold a news conference to publicize it.
In response, the Red Cross said it was dedicated to making sure the blood supply was safe.
