The federal government has opened a criminal investigation into a rental arrangement between the North Hudson Community Action Corporation and Sen. Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, reports The Star-Ledger.
Senator Menendez received at least $300,000 from the group over the nine years in which he represented the group’s district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He also helped the community-development group win federal aid, which some of his critics say is a conflict of interest.
Senator Menendez denied wrongdoing and said the investigation was orchestrated by his political opponents. Senator Menendez is now running for re-election to his Senate seat.
The charity’s view of the investigation was not included in the article.
