Senators Seek to Honor Jerry Lewis

September 7, 2006

Three senators have introduced a resolution to award Jerry Lewis, the comedian and host of a muscular-dystrophy telethon that has raised $1.4-billion over the past 40 years, with a Congressional Gold Medal, reports the Associated Press.

The telethon, a 20-hour event, raised a record $61-million this year for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Sponsored by Sen. John Ensign, Republican of Nevada, and Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, Democrats of New Jersey, the resolution needs the approval of at least two-thirds of the House of Representatives and 67 senators to pass.
