Monitors Say Sri Lankan Troops Killed Aid Workers

August 31, 2006

The Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission, an international monitoring group, released a statement blaming Sri Lankan government troops for the mass murder of 17 tsunami-relief workers this month, reports Reuters.

All but one of the victims, who were found shot dead in their office, were ethnic Tamils. The Sri Lankan government has been fighting with Tamil Tiger rebels, a group battling to form a separate ethnic nation in the north and east of the country.

The United Nations has threatened to withhold relief services from the region until the government discloses information about the killings. The government denies involvement.
