N.Y. State Senator Accused of Defrauding Charity

A member of New York State Senate was indicted last week on federal charges of mail fraud involving a nonprofit group he founded, according to The New York Times.

Efraín González Jr., a Democratic member of the Senate, was accused of spending $37,412 from the West Bronx Neighborhood Association, an organization he founded, to pay for personal expenses such as clothing, college tuition, and rent.

Mr. González said he did not do anything wrong, adding: “I’m going to fight for my constituents like I’m going to fight this case.”

Prosecutors charged him with mail fraud because they said he sent checks from the nonprofit group to credit-card companies and other businesses through the postal system.
