Nonprofit Radio Station in Afghanistan Bombed

August 23, 2006

A firebomb destroyed a small radio station run by Internews Network, in Logar, Afghanistan, slightly injuring the station manager earlier this month, reports The Eureka Reporter.

Internews, in Arcata, Calif., is raising money to rebuild the station, which had been broadcasting news and entertainment 10 hours daily. A spokeswoman for the news agency estimated the cost of replacing damaged equipment is between $5,000 and $10,000.

The station was not directly threatened prior to the bombing, but a letter distributed in the town, in eastern Afghanistan, raised concerns over the entertainment it provided, the paper reports.
