Debate Erupts Over Federal Money for AIDS Charities

August 11, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Some AIDS organizations are worried about a Senate plan to change the rules for how such charities spend federal aid, reports Reuters.

A Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Mike Enzi, Republican of Wyoming, and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, would require three-quarters of the money allocated under the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act to be used for medical services, the news service reports.

The lawmakers say they want to be sure federal aid helps patients get medicine and treatment they need to live longer, but officials of some AIDS charities say that they are struggling to meet demand for food, shelter, and other necessities and need federal money to be available for such purposes.
