Oxfam Struggles to Provide Aid to Lebanon

August 8, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Officials from Oxfam International, a global aid group, said they are struggling to get relief to those most in need in southern Lebanon while fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah militias continues to destroy crucial roads and bridges, BBC News reports.

The organization delivered 18 tons of clean water and sanitation and hygiene equipment to Cyprus, en route to Beirut. But officials there said they did not yet know when the water and equipment would reach Lebanon. Oxfam cannot fly the supplies directly to Lebanon because of security concerns, and a spokesman for the group called for a cease-fire, saying that was the only way the supplies and clean water could be delivered to those in need.

Charities overall have raised more than $35-million for Middle East aid, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports.
