The Guggenheim Foundation, in New York, is working with the government of Abu Dhabi to build a new museum in the United Arab Emirates, reports the Associated Press.
Thomas Krens, director of the Guggenheim Foundation, called the undertaking “hugely ambitious,” but expressed confidence in the museum’s ability to complete the project.
In addition to its headquarters in New York, Guggenheim museums operate in Las Vegas, Berlin, Venice, and Bilbao, Spain.
Frank Gehry will design the new museum, dubbed “GAD,” which will be more than 320,000 square feet, one-quarter larger than the biggest branch, in Bilbao.
The United Arab Emirates’ crown prince expects the Guggenheim to anchor a $27-billion cultural district designed to draw tourists.
