The 500 largest business donors in Britain gave 15 percent more to charities last year than they had in 2004, contributing about $1.9-billion in cash and products in 2005, reports The Financial Times, of London.

The article—based on the findings of the Charities Aid Foundation’s annual Charity Trends survey—noted that top donors last year were GSK, a pharmaceuticals company, with $690-million in gifts, the Royal Bank of Scotland ($102-million), British Petroleum ($100.9-million), HSBC bank ($86-million), and Barclays ($71-million).

Top causes included donations to help people affected by the tsunamis in South Asia, the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan, Hurricane Katrina, and the London bombings last July, the Times reports.
