Red Cross Feels Strain of Chapter Overhaul

June 27, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The American Red Cross, which has drawn severe criticism in recent years for its response to disasters, is experiencing new tensions as it restructures its chapter system, reports The Washington Post. The overhaul is happening at the same time the organization is searching for a new leader.

Under the reorganization, hundreds of small chapters will be overseen by the 200 largest chapters. The national office says the plan will help ensure proper oversight. But some nonprofit observers say it essentially forces the merger of many small chapters.

The changes were started under the leadership of Marsha Evans, who was ousted as Red Cross president in December after clashing with the charity’s board. Jack F. McGuire was named to fill in for Ms. Evans and is one of a half-dozen candidates in the running for the job of chief executive.
