As the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in Seattle, prepares to build a new headquarters and double its staff, it is also preparing to respond to widely circulating criticisms about its grant-making programs in global health, reports the Financial Times.
Some critics have charged that grant decisions are not being made systematically. Others question what they see as the foundation’s emphasis on the long-term innovation of drugs and technology over making existing treatments more widely available. Others still are concerned that the programs fail to factor in the political realities of the countries in which they operate.
In its annual report, the Gates Foundation outlines plans to re-evaluate its approach and operations.
