Douglas and Kristine Tompkins, former heads of the clothing labels Esprit and Patagonia, respectively, are putting a controversial face on “eco-philanthropy” in South America as they buy up large tracts of land in Chile and Argentina for a nature preserve, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The couple’s activism has sparked resentment among some Chileans, who describe the two Americans’ philosophy on conservation as arrogant, saying it clashes with the nation’s economic realities.
The Tompkins have secured about two million acres in the Southern Cone region at a cost of more than $150-million and reside full time on their purchased land.
