Mich. Governor Wants State to Accept Donation

June 8, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

A Michigan retail magnate’s offer of $1-million toward the completion of a trail in a state park has hit a snag because it is contingent on the trail being named for him, reports The Grand Rapids Press. The move would conflict with state policy, but Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she wants the state to find a way to work with the donor.

The Meijer Foundation pledged the money for the White Pine Trail, and would like it to be renamed the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail.

With the $1-million from the Meijer Foundation, the state would have access to $2.24-million in federal funds for the trail.
