Descendants of Josephine Louise Newcomb, whose bequest established the women’s college at Tulane University, in New Orleans, in 1886, have sued the institution, saying the institution has violated Mrs. Newcomb’s restrictions on her donation, reports The Times Picayune, in New Orleans, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The lawsuit comes after Tulane shut Newcomb College as part of cost-cutting measures in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Two heirs of Mrs. Newcomb are charging that by shutting the college, the university violated Mrs. Newcomb’s instructions on how her money was to be used.
University spokesmen said they could not comment until they had a chance to review the lawsuit.
