Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, is threatening legislative action against the Board of Trustees at American University, in Washington, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education.
In a letter sent Wednesday, Senator Grassley requested that the board pass resolutions to improve accountability and governance strategies within the next two weeks. Additionally, he discussed the possibility of federal legislation that would require revamping the board’s structure, with a possible provision to give the board the authority to fire its own members.
The trustees responded that they intend to cooperate with the lawmaker’s suggestions and are meeting this week to discuss the changes. (A paid subscription is required to view this article.)
