Funds for Darfur Dry Up

May 4, 2006

A shortage of donations has driven U.N. agencies and other aid organizations to make drastic cuts in programs, services, and supplies in the Darfur region of Sudan, which continues to be devastated by war, reports the Associated Press.

After three years of ongoing strife in Darfur, the ebbing flow of contributions recently forced the World Food Program to reduce food rations by half and Unicef to halt its measles-vaccination program altogether.

Aid workers say they hope that recent attention from the Bush administration will spur an increase in both private and government donations.
