Immigration Law Could Hurt Charities

April 17, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Charities are worried that Congress will pass legislation that could penalize groups that help illegal immigrants, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The House has already passed a measure with such penalties, which would put groups like Teach for America, Catholic Charities, and nonprofit hospitals in a tough position because their missions require them to provide help to anyone who needs it. “We don’t have any position on immigration issues, but our mission is to provide an excellent education,” says a Teach for America official.

When the Senate returns from a holiday recess this month, it is expected to consider whether to move forward with immigration legislation.
