Red Cross Hands Over Documents to FBI

The American Red Cross, in Washington, said yesterday that it is handing over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation results from the charity’s probe into possible misdeeds at one of its distribution sites in New Orleans, The Washington Post reports.
But the move was criticized by two Red Cross volunteers, Jerome Nickerson and Michael Wolters, as too little too late. The volunteers said they had already reported their findings to the FBI after writing a report on an investigation they did on alleged abuses. The two men said the Red Cross, which initially asked them to do the investigation, later told them to discontinue their work.
Jack McGuire, the interim chief executive of the charity, declined to comment on Mr. Nickerson’s and Mr. Wolter’s claims.
Last week, three Red Cross volunteers in New Orleans were let go after allegations arose that food and other supplies meant for victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma had been diverted.
