Checkoff Boxes on Tax Forms Net Donations

March 31, 2006

The amount taxpayers are donating to charity through the checkoff boxes on their state tax forms is growing, according to the Federation of Tax Administrators, a story in The Wall Street Journal reports. The group said tax payers donated $32.8-million through the checkoff boxes in 2002, the most recent year it had analyzed. That was an increase of more than $27-million over the amount collected in 2000.

The figures include contributions to election funds as well as to charities. Tax records show that while the checkoff programs are becoming more prevalent, they are expanding at a very slow rate.
