Former Congressional Aide Enriched by Charity

March 27, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

A former chief of staff to Rep. Tom DeLay, Republican of Texas, collected more than a third of the donations made to the U.S. Family Network, a now-defunct charity the adviser founded to promote a “pro-family” agenda in Congress, reports The Washington Post.

Edwin A. Buckham and his wife, Wendy, received more than $1-million from the organization, which brought in most of its donations from clients of the lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who has pleaded guilty to tax fraud and conspiracy to defraud clients and bribe a public official.

The Buckhams and their lawyer did not respond to requests for comment. A lawyer for Mr. DeLay played down Mr. Buckham’s influence with the Congressman.
