MTV Offers Alternative Spring Break
March 20, 2006
Programs for college students who want to volunteer on their spring breaks continue to rise in popularity this year, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The latest on the bandwagon is a program jointly sponsored by MTV and United Way to send college-age people to help rebuild the Gulf Coast region damaged by the hurricanes last fall.
But many groups that are working to encourage college students to volunteer during their vacations say they are wary of MTV’s involvement because they consider the cable network largely responsible for promoting the “traditional,” hedonistic spring-break image in the first place.
