GRAFT IN TSUNAMI REBUILDING
March 15, 2006
The aid organization Oxfam has suspended its non-emergency operations in Aceh, a tsunami-devastated province of Indonesia, after learning that some of its money has gone missing, reports BBC. An internal audit turned up evidence that tens of thousands of dollars had been lost, the first solid indication of graft tied to rebuilding efforts in Indonesia. Oxfam is still looking into exactly how much money was taken, and says it plans to resume its programs as soon as the investigation is completed.
