UNIVERSITIES DEBATE BIG BIOMEDICAL GIFTS

The Johns Hopkins University and a few other institutions of higher education have rejected grants from the Alfred E. Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education. The universities fear that the fund’s plan to provide $2-billion to establish university programs to develop the commercial potential of biomedical-research findings may be as much an effort to control patent rights as it is an act of philanthropy.
