AMERICORPS CUTS PROPOSED
March 1, 2006
President Bush has proposed winding down the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, asking Congress to provide $5-million next year, compared with the $27-million it now receives, reports The Washington Post. The program employs more than 1,100 young people who spend 10 months working on service projects related to homeland security and disaster relief. The White House plan has caused concern among former AmeriCorps members who are urging program supporters to persuade members of Congress to oppose the President’s plan.
