ORTHODOX CHURCH

February 28, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Several bishops, priests, and parishioners who are members of the the Orthodox Church in America, an offshoot of the Russian Orthodox Church, are demanding an internal investigation and an audit of 10 years of spending after allegations of financial misconduct at the organization, reports The Washington Post. Their requests are to be considered Wednesday when the church’s leaders, the Holy Synod, meet. Senior officers in the 400,000-member denomination have been accused of using church funds—including donations from a wealthy businessman, U.S. military chaplains, and parishioners—to pay personal credit-card bills, pay bribes to people who wanted to reveal sexual affairs of clergy members, and support family members. Church leaders have not publicly responded to the allegations.
