OLYMPIC GIFT TO CHARITY

February 14, 2006

Joey Cheek, the American who won a gold medal in speedskating at the Olympics, has given his $25,000 prize to Right to Play, a charity in Toronto that encourages children in the world’s poorest regions to play sports, reports the Associated Press. Mr. Cheek, who won the 500-meter in Turin, Italy, on Monday said he wanted the group to use the money to help children in the war-torn area of Darfur in Sudan. Mr. Cheek says that in addition to donating money, he intends to visit the Darfur region to call attention to the plight of its residents.
