U.S. AIDS GRANTS

January 30, 2006

The Bush administration has set aside $200-million in overseas AIDS assistance for small charities and religious groups that have never received U.S. government grants before, reports the Associated Press. As a result, a growing number of new groups are being formed and charities that previously had little experience fighting AIDS are seeking funds. Well-established humanitarian organizations in Africa, where most of the federal money is directed, are concerned that the new groups are not experienced enough to understand how to combat the disease.
