IVORY COAST
January 26, 2006
U.N. agencies have suspended their operations in western Ivory Coast after rioters looted charity offices and warehouses, reports the Reuters Foundation’s AlertNet. While no U.N. staff members were injured, the U.N. World Food Program’s country director said conditions remained too dangerous for employees to return. The United Nations was providing food aid and other support to about 13,000 refugees who have fled fighting in nearby Liberia and Burkina Faso.
