DOLLY PARTON’S CHARITY

January 24, 2006

Prompted by her father’s inability to read, the country singer Dolly Parton established a charity 10 years ago to fight illiteracy by mailing a free book each month to children in Sevier County, Tenn., where Ms. Parton grew up, reports the Associated Press. Today the program, which sends children books from the time they are born until they reach age 5, has grown to 41 states, and this spring Tennessee plans to be the first state that makes it available in every county.
