Black-History Museums: A Sampling

California
The Museum of the African Diaspora, in San Francisco, plans to open this year. The museum covers 20,000
square feet and cost $11-million.
District of Columbia
The National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution, will be built on the Washington Mall. The cost is estimated to be between $300-million and $400-million, and the museum is expected to open in 2013.
Georgia
The African-American Panoramic Experience Museum, in Atlanta, is planning a $30-million, 90,000-square-foot expansion.
The Tubman African American Museum, an 8,000-square-foot facility in Macon, is building a $15-million, 49,000-square-foot space.
Illinois
The DuSable Museum of African American History, in Chicago, is adding a $25-million, 61,000-square-foot wing that is scheduled to open in 2007.
Kentucky
The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage expects to open in Louisville this year. The cost is $23-million, for both new and renovated buildings that will create a 55,000-square-foot space.
Maryland
The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, in Baltimore, plans to open in June. The estimated cost is $34-million for an 82,000-square-foot space.
The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum and Justice Learning Center, in Baltimore, is planning a $50-million expansion.
Ohio
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center opened in Cincinnati last year at a cost of $110-million for its 158,000-square-foot space.
Pennsylvania
A yet-unnamed black-history museum is planned for Harrisburg, at a cost of $20-million.
South Carolina
The International African-American Museum is planned for Charleston, at a cost of $60-million for a roughly 70,000-square-foot space.
Washington
A yet-unnamed museum of black history is expected to open in Seattle in 2007. Cost is estimated at $17-million for a 22,000-square-foot space.
