Overview of California Foundations

April 1, 2004 | Read Time: 1 minute

California Foundations: 2000-2001 Update, by James M. Ferris, provides information about grant makers throughout the state. Mr. Ferris, director of the Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles, writes that after significant growth in California foundations’ assets and giving in the 1990s, assets decreased by 5.7 percent from 2000 to 2001, and giving increased by only 3.9 percent during that time period. However, Mr. Ferris notes that foundation assets and grants made in 2001—$66-billion and $3-billion, respectively—were significantly higher than in 1991. The report also offers data on the percentage of grant dollars various causes received and it ranks the state’s top 100 foundations by both giving and assets.
