Report on Child Well-Being
October 30, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute
2003 Kids Count Data Book ranks states on 10 indicators designed to measure the well-being of children and youths. The Annie E. Casey Foundation, in Baltimore, produces this report annually and provides information both nationally and by state. According to the report, eight of the measures — including infant- and child-mortality rates, the number of girls ages 15 to 17 giving birth, and the percentage of teenagers who dropped out of high school — indicate improvement from 1990 to 2000. The percentage of low-birth-weight babies and the percentage of families headed by a single parent both increased. The data contained in the book, as well as additional information and maps that illustrate how towns and counties measure up, are available on the Web site http://www.kidscount.org.
