What Works in Youth Media: Case Studies From Around the World, by Sheila Kinkade and Christy Macy, profiles organizations in seven countries that give young people the opportunity to develop leadership and journalism skills as they produce radio programs, television shows, newspapers, and magazines. Ms. Kinkade, a communications consultant in Baltimore, and Ms. Macy, publications manager at the International Youth Foundation, in Baltimore, describe how the groups were formed and what types of topics the youths cover. The authors also discuss management lessons the organizations’ leaders have learned and some of the challenges they have faced—for example, many have struggled to generate income through subscriptions and advertising to lessen their dependence on foundation support. Among the efforts the authors cite are a weekly show on Albanian national television focusing on children’s issues and a magazine in Zambia dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
