IRS Plans Free Workshops for Tax-Exempt Groups

February 6, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Internal Revenue Service is offering free one-day workshops in 11 cities to small and midsize tax-exempt organizations.

The workshops will cover the procedures nonprofit organizations must follow to maintain their tax exemptions and comply with other tax laws. They are designed for board members, officers, and staff members of new small or midsize organizations that have received exemption within the last five years and have an annual income of less than $1-million. While the workshops are open to anyone, they cover basic information and thus will probably be of limited use to tax professionals or large charities, the IRS says. The IRS plans to offer workshops every year in different cities and towns.

Among the topics to be reviewed are exemption and filing requirements, the unrelated-business income tax, public inspection and disclosure of Form 990 informational tax returns, gaming activities, and the audit process. IRS experts on tax-exemption rules and procedures will lead the sessions.

The workshops are being held through June in Albany, N.Y.; Detroit; Durham, N.C.; Garden City, N.Y.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla.; Kansas City, Kan.; Las Vegas; New Orleans; and Seattle.

The workshops are free but people who want to attend must register in advance. To register, go to “Calendar of Events” on the IRS Web site at http://www.irs.gov/eo and click on the desired workshop, or call IRS Exempt Organizations Customer Account Services toll-free at (877) 829-5500 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Eastern time.
