How to Get the Grant
January 23, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute
A Concise Guide to Getting Grants for Nonprofit Organizations, by Mark Guyer, leads readers through the process of obtaining grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies. Mr. Guyer, fund-raising coordinator at Stark County District Library, in Canton, Ohio, begins by describing the different types of grant makers and the relative likelihood of winning grants from each. For example, he suggests that nonprofit organizations will have the most success when approaching local foundations and the least when attempting to obtain federal grants. He stresses the importance of learning about potential grant makers and choosing ones whose grant-making priorities fit a charity’s needs. Mr. Guyer says failure to provide required information is one of the most common reasons proposals are denied, so he shows grant seekers how to check out a grant maker’s requirements to avoid omitting crucial information. He then outlines each of the sections he believes should be included in a standard grant proposal. The book includes a sample proposal and checklists to help grant seekers plan their fund-raising efforts.
