Nuts-and-Bolts Guide to Nonprofit Program Design, Marketing, and Evaluation, by Carter McNamara, describes these intertwined elements of a nonprofit organization’s work that must be developed together, according to Mr. McNamara, a Minneapolis-based consultant and author of this “how to” publication. The first section describes the process of creating and implementing a program, including developing a strategic plan. It covers several approaches to program development, describing, among others, a method that parallels a typical business-development process. The marketing section includes tips for packaging, naming, and pricing a program. Supporting worksheets provide exercises, such as a list of questions to help identify competitors, and checklists for materials needed to support a program. The guide also describes four of the most common kinds of program evaluation, questions to consider, and methods for collecting information for the evaluation. Appendices cover research methods, examples of promotional activities, and a list of organizations that assist nonprofit groups.
