Benchmarks for Strengthening an Organization

Standards for Excellence: A Self-Help Tool for Nonprofits’ Organizational Effectiveness gives pointers on how well-managed and responsibly governed organizations should operate. Organized in a checklist format, the booklet concentrates on areas like a charity’s mission and programs, governance, human resources, conflicts of interest, financial and legal concerns, openness, fund raising, and public affairs and public policy. A section on donor relations, for example, provides a checklist of principles to which an organization should adhere, such as ensuring the confidentiality of information a donor would reasonably expect to be private, and honoring donor requests to curtail mailings or telephone solicitations.
