Solutions for America: What’s Already Out There

This report provides summary descriptions of community-based programs that are successfully dealing with problems and issues such as unemployment, neighborhood revitalization, and drug use among young people. The 19 programs profiled in this book were chosen by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change because they produced results that other organizations should be able to achieve by copying the most-successful approaches.

Five types of program are described: those that help young people stay in school and off drugs; programs that revitalize local economies; ones that help families by providing low-cost housing, reliable transportation, and training for jobs that pay well enough for people to support themselves and their families; community-development programs; and programs that use collaborative approaches.

The report profiles, for example, the Housing First program of the Los Angeles group Beyond Shelter, which places homeless families into permanent housing, then provides services such as counseling, child care, and job training to help them after the move; and The Bridge, an after-school program designed to reduce pregnancy among teenagers in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville, Fla. The Bridge offers activities and services such as intensive tutoring, employment placement, and homework help.

Each profile provides a summary of the problem the organization was seeking to solve, providing background on the issue and showing how the group came up with a successful program and what it takes to keep such a program running.
