February 7, 2002 | Read Time: 1 minute

Winning Ways: Great Nonprofit Management Ideas Learned From the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management
by Susan Sanow and Kelly Sweeney McShane

This book is a compilation of ideas from 25 nonprofit groups that have received the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management, which recognizes organizations in the Washington metropolitan region.

The ideas are organized in nine chapters, and cover planning, financial management, organizational management, resource development, people development, information and communications, risk management, and technology.

Each chapter, in providing examples of best practices, first lays out the basic skills needed in an area of nonprofit management, then provides insight into the strategies used by the organization.

The book also includes charts, sample documents, and cost estimates, as well as examples of the successful use of technology and the development of corporate sponsorships.

Ms. Sanow is deputy director of the Washington Council of Agencies and the founder of the Washington Post Award. Ms. McShane is executive director of Community of Hope, a Washington charity.
