Recipients of President’s Service Awards

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Bush’s Daily Points of Light Award.

The Points of Light Foundation, a Washington charity, assists the president in making the choices and carrying out the award program. The recipients:

2009. Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council, Hackensack, a collaborative volunteer-placement program started last year to address the health, nutrition, and education needs of local children and families.

2010. Cooperative Educational Services Agency No. 10 Foster Grandparent Program, Chippewa Falls, Wis., a program started in 1985 to enable elderly people to provide instruction to students with special needs.


2011. Gabe Byars, Durham, N.C., who has volunteered as an advocate at the Durham Crisis Response Center: Domestic and Sexual Violence Services for almost two years. Mr. Byars is also organizing a support group for male survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

2012. Charles Winstead, Durham, N.C., a volunteer for the Durham County Literacy Council for eight years who started a student writing group at the council and helped organize a state literacy conference.

2013. Winner’s Club of Calhoun, Ga., an organization that engages emotionally disturbed and mentally and physically disabled children in educational, recreational, and community-service opportunities.

2014. John Jacobson, Los Angeles, a professional choreographer and writer who established America Sings in 1988. The group holds a series of music festivals and enlists choral groups to sing and conduct community service at performances, including food, toy, and clothing collections.
