Ahead of the Class: A Handbook for Preparing New Teachers from New Sources, by Beatriz Chu Clewell and Ana Maria Villegas, provides a model for programs working to solve the teacher shortage in rural and urban public schools. The model is based on the work of the Pathways to Teaching Careers program, operated by the DeWitt Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund. Illustrating the need for teacher-recruitment programs, the introduction cites the National Center for Education Statistics to the effect that public schools will need at least two million new teachers by 2010.
