Food-Delivery Program for Elderly Is Honored

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Bush’s Daily Points of Light Award.
The Points of Light Foundation, a Washington charity, assists the president in making the choices and carrying out the award program. The recipients:
1998. Food for Seniors, Champaign, Ill., a program of the Stevick Senior Center that delivers free groceries twice a month to low-income elderly people.
1999. Montville Nonprofit Gateway, Board of Directors, Uncasville, Conn., which established the Montville Fall Festival in 1995 to help local nonprofit organizations raise funds. In addition, the board created a scholarship fund for students with “hidden” disabilities such as attention deficit disorder.
2000. Kevin Myers, North Manchester, Ind., a student at Manchester College who organized numerous community-service activities, including the Haunted Forest Halloween event, to raise funds for community needs. He also organized several campus blood drives.
2001. Young Emerging Leaders of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, a nonprofit organization that provides tutors and mentors, as well as cultural, leadership, and recreational programs, for underserved youths.
2002. The Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership, Dothan, Ala., a volunteer program started in 1992 to fight alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse. In 2001, the partnership conducted a health fair for Latino girls age 9 to 14 as part of an effort to address the health and cultural needs of Hispanic residents.
2003. Lena Cray, Kalamazoo, Mich., a volunteer for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program who knits quilts, baby hats, scarves, and other items to be distributed to needy people. Ms. Cray also volunteers for the Stroke Club Support Program, and serves as a tutor for disabled children through the Senior Services’ Intergenerational Program.
