Facts and Fallacies 2001: Setting the Record Straight on California’s Nonprofit Community, by Kathy Crabb and Florence L. Green, discusses eight common perceptions about nonprofit organizations and seeks to provide data showing that those perceptions are wrong. One such perception, for example, is that “most nonprofit income comes from charitiable contributions.” Researchers, however, have shown that “nonprofits increasingly earn much of their income.” Other perceptions include a belief that nonprofit groups are prohibited by law from lobbying, and that charities are ineffective and do not meet the same standards as businesses. This report, published by the Nonprofit Policy Council of the California Association of Nonprofits, also contains a short history of nonprofit organizations, a snapshot of charities in California by type, the challenges those groups face, and recommendations for future action. Ms. Crabb is editor of the association’s newsletter and Ms. Green is executive director of the organization.
