Independent Sector, a national coalition of charities and grant makers, has issued a set of policy recommendations that it urges presidential and Congressional candidates to adopt.
The report, “Towards a More Vibrant Society: Strengthening the Role of Nonprofits,” asks candidates to encourage giving by Americans in part by endorsing legislation to allow people who do not itemize deductions on their federal income-tax returns to write off charitable gifts.
Other policies promoted by Independent Sector include preserving the independence of nonprofit organizations “by protecting and enhancing the rights of organizations to educate, advocate, and lobby government,” and ensuring accountability by increasing federal funds for the Internal Revenue Service’s charity regulators.
