Guide to Educating Board Members Emphasizes Mission

Creating Caring & Capable Boards: Reclaiming the Passion for Active Trusteeship
By Katherine Tyler Scott

This book urges board members of non-profit groups to learn more about their organizations and to reaffirm their roles as custodians of the common good.

Ms. Scott is executive director of Trustee Leadership Development, located in Indianapolis. The first part of the book provides an introduction to the duties of trusteeship and the role that it has played in the American philanthropic tradition.

Ms. Scott then provides a method to educate board members so that they will be less apt to rely on quick fixes and more inclined to steer their organizations toward long-term success. She recommends taking the time necessary to reflect deeply on the history and mission of the organization and on the constituents that the group serves.
