New ‘Points of Light’ Honorees Include Photography Teacher

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Clinton’s Daily Points of Light Award.

The Points of Light Foundation, a Washington charity, assists the President in making the choices and carrying out the award program. The recipients:

1413. Julie Bachman, Stateline, Nev., a lawyer who provides pro bono legal services to women at the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center who have experienced domestic violence, sexual harassment, or sexual assault.

1414. Fred Appel, Canfield, Ohio, who provides emotional support to patients with terminal illnesses and their families through the Hospice of the Valley; he began volunteering in 1981 after he saw the need for such hospice services when his wife was dying of cancer.


1415. Sarah Hawkins, Atlanta, a high-school student who tutors several deaf and hearing children and who volunteers some Saturdays at a recreation center for disadvantaged children.

1416. Walter Bodle, Seattle, a retired teacher who created Youth in Focus, a non-profit group that provides inner-city youths with after-school and summer photography lessons.
