Kellogg: $13-Million for Volunteerism

June 3, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, in Battle Creek, Mich., has pledged $13-million over four years to expand efforts to incorporate community service into the curriculum of American elementary and secondary schools.

The Kellogg money will support four programs: a demonstration project in five states — California, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, and South Carolina — to identify model state and district policies that promote or hinder the integration of community service into classroom lessons; a national commission on volunteerism and education; a network to increase communication among the youth and educational groups involved in promoting community service among schoolchildren; and research to identify promising practices and compile any evidence of the difference that community service makes on the educational experience.
