Measuring Neighborhood Health: Baseline Indicators for Seven Minneapolis Neighborhoods is a booklet from the Minneapolis Foundation that uses a mapping technique developed by the University of Minnesota’s Institute on Race and Poverty to measure the income levels, property values, and deficiencies of seven Minneapolis neighborhoods. The maps use shading to represent areas with high concentrations of poverty, as well as to show residential demographics (such as the percentages of female-headed families with children under the age of 18). The maps also use icons that represent progress in each neighborhood, such as day-care centers and new construction projects, as well as such indicators of blight as abandoned buildings, burglaries, and pollution.
