State News Service Financed by Pew Trusts

February 11, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

Charities and others can now keep abreast of important public-policy developments in every state through stateline.org, a new Web site financed by a $4.5-million grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts.

The site, a daily news service that began operating last month, focuses on five major public-policy issues — education, health care, taxes, utility deregulation, and the overhaul of the welfare system — and how each state is dealing with them.

In addition to articles by staff writers, the site offers round-ups of stories about state government from news outlets around the country and provides links to more than 100 newspapers and other news sources.

Ed Fouhy, executive director of the Pew Center on the States, said the site was intended to help people get information on the ways that states have been responding as Congress has given them more flexibility in spending federal money. The center was created by Pew to gather information and operate the news service.
